Interpol Red Notices Filed for Hasina and Son; India Silent on Extradition By Staff Reporter | BanglaConnection | Indo–Bangla Desk Dateline: Dhaka/Delhi, Sept 7, 2025
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Home Affairs has formally requested Interpol Red Notices for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, citing allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice.
The move comes more than a year after Hasina fled the country in August 2024, following mass student-led protests that paralyzed Dhaka. Joy, her son and former ICT adviser, is believed to be residing between the United States and India.
Indian authorities have yet to respond to the extradition request, raising questions about regional cooperation and legal reciprocity. Analysts say the case could strain Indo–Bangla relations at a time when both nations are expanding trade and cultural ties.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have urged Dhaka to ensure due process and avoid politically motivated prosecutions. “Transparency and fairness must be upheld,” Amnesty said in a statement.
The Red Notice request is expected to be reviewed by Interpol’s legal division before any international action is taken.
